Architect Academy is an exploration of a flatpack cooperative multiplayer game where players work together to design and construct a house using a variety of architectural styles and modular components. The game includes over 60 pieces, designed for interactive and creative play, and is packaged in a compact, flat-pack box with integrated storage and a style spinner. It is designed for ages 10-12, encouraging creativity, teamwork, and an introduction to architectural concepts.
The objective was to design a flat-pack multiplayer game that is educational and engaging, while also showcasing skills in laser cutting, CAD design, and packaging. The game had to include modular components that could be disassembled and stored compactly while maintaining a professional and polished aesthetic. The project also required an emphasis on material efficiency and functionality.
The concept for Architect Academy drew inspiration from traditional building block games and modern architectural styles. By incorporating a variety of styles—Modern, Traditional, and Medieval—the game aimed to make architectural design accessible and exciting for young players. The design also considered practical elements, such as compact packaging and durable materials, to enhance usability and longevity.
The initial ideation phase involved sketching various game concepts and packaging solutions. Early ideas explored different ways to incorporate style categories and modularity into the game. These sketches informed decisions about the size and design of the pieces, the layout of the packaging, and the mechanics of the spinner.
The playing pieces were designed in CAD software and optimized for laser cutting. Each piece was categorized by architectural style and included walls, doors, windows, and other elements. To ensure durability and a snug fit during gameplay, the pieces were designed with precise tolerances for a friction-fit connection.
The spinner, a core element of gameplay, was integrated into the packaging design. The flat-pack box was engineered to include compartments for storing pieces by style and had etched instructions on the lid for easy reference. The packaging design emphasized functionality and ease of setup and takedown.
Multiple prototypes were created to test the gameplay mechanics, material tolerances, and packaging efficiency. Iterations focused on improving the fit and finish of the pieces, the durability of the spinner mechanism, and the structural integrity of the flat-pack box.
